The Eyes Have It

Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait. The grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas.    - Henry Ford

There are a zillion things to love about the Olympics.  At the very top of my zillion: the eyes.  The eyes of the world’s best athletes on display for the entire world to see… and take notice.  Over and over again the cameras caught a zoom of the athletes’ eyes…before, during, and after they executed the few seconds, minutes or hours of their event.  Most have endured years of grueling training and untold sacrifice to stand in that sacred place… at the gate, on the track, on center ice.  Look into the eyes of Justyna Kowalczyk, Apolo Ohno, Petter Northug

Unwavering focus.

Sight on the impossible as if it were right in front of them.

They know something special, a secret, about the path between earth and our dreams.

They know.

As the colors of their nations floated to the top of the risers, there on the medal stand were eyes of athletes who knew the magic behind vision, plans, and execution.  You could almost see the credits running in their heads of the countless hours, people and events that led to that very moment in their young lives.  Looking into the eyes of Shaun White, you sense there is certainly a sequel.

Look in the mirror today.  Look into the eyes of your team. Getting ready for the next Olympics starts today.  Is it in you?

Yes, the eyes … look into yours in the mirror every morning, before you shave, or brush your teeth, or put on your make-up: Is it there? the burning desire to make this a bold day, to go forward and make difference, to move your plan ahead by a step, or two, or three, to get that much closer to your goal, until the day you reach it? In those eyes, do you see the vision of what it will be like, when you reach that goal? the feeling inside of having persisted through challenges and doubts, through distractions and temptations to ease off? Can you feel it? Can you see it? Can you experience it by looking into those eyes? Look into your eyes in the mirror every morning and see it there:
Today I will move one day closer to my goal!

From this day forward I will watch the Olympics from a completely different perspective. I will be watching the eyes!
